Don't Get Me Started; or, Why I Hate Windows

Anger

I have noticed through watching the news and occasionally listening to the radio that angry people seem to be the most engaging. According to PBS, twice as many Americans listen to the always-angry cable news than famously level-headed NPR. As such, in the name of making sure my blog is engaging to its audience, I decided to adopt an angry tone in my blog.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) for me, however, there is nothing that aggravates me so much that I can rant about it for 5 blog posts. I therefore found myself in a bit of a conundrum as to what I was going to use as a topic for my passion blog.

It was at that moment that I remembered my favorite party game: Don't Get Me Started.

The premise of the game is that all of the players sit in a circle and take turns going on angry rants about different subjects. The fun of the game comes from the conventionally benign and mundane topic of the rant. It is the job of the player whose turn it is to come up with the most humorous and unique rant possible in a very short period of time.

For example, let's say the topic was windows. Here's a brief example of the kind of rant one may expect from the game, cut short for the sake of the word count and with italics and punctuation for emphasis:

"Everybody thinks that windows are so harmless. They just sit there, letting you look through them, acting like they have nothing to hide. But you know what? They have an agenda. They. hate. birds. Every day, thousands of birds die from flying into closed windows. Some people blame it on the birds, but that's just what the windows want you to think. Don't let the windows deceive you. Wake up!"

If I were to base a passion blog (which I would entitle Don't Get Me Started) on the game, I'd use your comments to generate 3 or 4 topics to rant about. Note that I will not rant about countries, states, ethnicities, religions, or anything else that will legitimately offend people. I will also not use living people as topics, nor any of the dictators of the last century (as it would be insensitive and inevitably inadequate), although I will rant about any other famous dead person. Anything else that is not obviously offensive to any reasonable person is fair game. I eagerly await your suggestions in the comments.

  1. I really like how you made it sound like you are personally talking to me. Your humor also had me almost laughing out loud! I think the idea you have is very interesting and will be very entertaining to read! I look forward to your rants and will enjoy your humor thoroughly in the future. I sadly cannot think of a topic to suggest to you, but I'm sure you will come up with something hilarious!

  2. Oh yessss. I would very much like to see rants on commonplace topics. In your windows example, you employed a great infusion of humor and factual emphasis to create a surprisingly infallible and semi-serious argument. If you can rant about this for every topic, it's gonna be amazing.

  3. Your use of humor is great and, of course, the drama will always entice viewers. Just be careful not to offend anyone with posts, because although we may not see things as offensive others may. It’s hard to understand other perspectives especially since the internet is so vast and expansive.

  5. This sounds like such an interesting idea for a blog. Just reading the little example makes me want to read more. I like how you were able to take something as simple as windows and turn it into a rant for the blog, it was very creative. I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but I am looking forward to reading your future blog posts!

  6. I'm excited to keep up with your blog! This is a very unique idea and something that will keep anyone interested. I love your idea on including the audience and giving them the chance to chose what the next blog is going to be about. Your small paragraph on windows already made me laugh, looking forward to the rest!
